About Judge Beverly A. Scarlett
Judge Beverly A. Scarlett is a native of Hillsborough, North Carolina and a 1983 graduate of Saint Augustine’s College. Following a rewarding career at University of North Carolina School of Medicine, she enrolled in North Carolina Central University School of Law-Evening Division. Being conferred a Juris Doctor, Judge Scarlett engaged in the practice of law in her hometown concentrating in the areas of Family Law, Juvenile Abuse, Neglect and Dependency, Juvenile Delinquency and Child Support. In 1998, Judge Scarlett closed her practice and began service as an assistant prosecutor in Prosecutorial District 15-B, Orange and Chatham counties, under the leadership of District Attorney Carl Fox. Judge Scarlett fought to protect rights of victims of Domestic Violence, Child Abuse and the community at large from incidents of Driving While Impaired. Judge Scarlett was appointed to the District Court Bench for Judicial District 15-B by Governor Mike Easley and was sworn into office on February 9, 2007.
Judge Scarlett has continued her commitment to children and families by implementing Orange County Domestic Violence Court and Accountability Court for Truancy. Judge Scarlett has served as primary judge for Orange County Adult Drug Court and Family Drug Court. In 2007, Speaker of the House Joe Hackney appointed Judge Scarlett to the North Carolina Domestic Violence Commission where she served as a commission member and chair of the Legislative Subcommittee from 2007-2011. During August 2008, Judge Scarlett was appointed to serve on the North Carolina Drug Court Advisory Committee by Judge Ralph Walker, Director of the Administrative Office of the Courts. Judge Scarlett continues to work to improve the lives of children and enhance families and communities by focusing on public safety, truancy, and rehabilitation. Judge Scarlett has dedicated time, attention and resources to our most vulnerable population-children removed from their natural parents. On June 7, 2018, Judge Scarlett was appointed to the Governor’s Crime Commission by Governor Roy Cooper. Judge Scarlett retired April 1, 2021 having served the state of North Carolina for 33 years.
